Brideswell to come alive for festival
In the coming week a small village in South Roscommon is going to come alive with what promises to be one of the highlights of the Roscommon events calendar this summer.
Brideswell Pattern Festival takes place on the last weekend every July and this year’s festival will take place between Thursday, July 23, and Monday, July 27, and will mark Brideswell Annual Pattern’s 58th year since its revival in 1957.
Right through from Thursday to Monday there will be an action packed schedule of events that once again will leave everyone with fond memories of their visit to the heartland of South Roscommon.
On Thursday, July 23, the festival kicks off with Céilí Mor with 'The Anally Céilí Band’. Tickets are only €10 and can be purchased on the door. The Festival will also officially open in O’Connell’s Pub on Thursday 23 with traditional music, all musicians welcome come along and enjoy the craic!
On Friday, July 24, the village gathering will be held, followed by The Cube with MC Marty Morrissey. The dinner will be chicken curry or vol au vents and hopefully will appeal to the crowd. The Cube will be for people of all ages and five celebrity guests will be announced on Facebook prior to the event. Groups of ten or more are guaranteed a participant in The Cube.
The group nominates one person. There will also be an open draw for all attendees, if you are interested in partaking in The Cube please state this when entering on the night. The winner of The Cube will receive a specially commissioned plaque. Bright and early the following day, Saturday 25, boasts a number of festival highlights including a walk in association with the local defibrillator group at 12pm from the Festival marquee.
The committee has added a family cycle and an adult cycle at 3pm from the Festival marquee. The family cycle is 8km and the adult cycle is 31Km. Entry to these is €10 per family for the family cycle and €5 per adult.
At 3pm there will be a GAA blitz for the local U8 and U10 girls teams followed by refreshments and in the marquee.
At 6pm there will be a special tour of Derryglad folk museum well worth a visit as it is one of the finest displays in the West of Ireland.
This will be followed by dancing in the Festival Marquee to Ireland’s newest country sensation Shane Owens and his band. Sean Brennan will perform from 10pm as a support act so come early to get a good seat. Tickets can be purchased from the door and we are open at 9.30pm. Tickets are €15 and you are encouraged to arrive early.
Sunday, July 26, will also play host to an action-packed schedule of events starting with the Annual Pattern Mass at 12 noon in the village followed by a cake sale in aid of Brideswell National School and Wheel of Fortune.
There will also be children’s workshops, entertainment and amusements, and traditional stations and don’t forget at 4pm there will be Monster Bingo with a prize fund of €2,500 doors open at 3.30.
On Pattern Sunday night Brideswell Pattern Festival committee has organised a special night with Brendan Shine and his band with Sean Brennan as a support act. Doors open at 9.30 and there will be dancing from 10. Tickets are only €10 and can be purchased on the door.
The festival 'Scattering’ takes place on Monday, July 27, in Hamrock’s Pub with a massive BBQ at 9pm followed by music with 'Tickle the Pig’ at 10.30pm.
Outside of the festivities one can relax in the two pubs (O’Connell’s and Hamrock’s). There will be music running on Sunday 27 with Hamrock’s hosting Shaney Mac from 6 to 8 and Streetwise from 10pm and O'Connells hosting the sensational Buckeye on Pattern Sunday night.Please support the 50 50 draw over the weekend….the more that’s in thebigger the pot!
