Big traffic delays after lorry oveturns on motorway

Motorists are experiencing major delays on the Connaught side of Athlone this evening.

It comes after a waste truck overturned on the M6 motorway earlier today, closing the stretch eastbound between junctions 13 and 14.

Drivers are now being diverted off the motorway and back onto junction 12 Roscommon via local roads.

AA Roadwatch is reporting that traffic is extremely heavy on the diversion and with the heavy rain currently falling, further delays are expected on the Roscommon side and for traffic coming right back into town.

The lorry is expected to be removed from the scene by a crane later this evening.
