Update power restored to local homes and businesses following outage
A number of homes and business premises in Athlone, which were affected by a power cut earlier today (Wednesday), have had their electricity supply restored.
The power cut occurred at 12 noon and at one stage the ESB said it was affecting up to 700 customers.
The Ulster Bank branch on Mardyke Street was forced to close temporarily as a result of the power cut. It has since reopened.
The eatery Savoury Fare, on John Broderick Street, was also among the premises which were affected for a time.
Work is currently taking place to install traffic lights at a new pedestrian crossing on Mardyke Street, across from the Athlone Towncentre. It's not known whether the power cut today was caused by this work.
