Good news for hardpressed athlone motorists

The old Garrycastle road in Athlone, from Retreat to Cypress Gardens, is expected to reopen this weekend, after an improvement project lasting over a month.
Athlone Municipal District manager Pat Keating told an Athlone Chamber of Commerce and Industry event in the Wineport Lodge last evening that he hoped the project would conclude this weekend.
The project, which the council said was the final part of the new Garrycastle Bridge development, involves the laying of a footpath, work on the wall at the old Garrycastle Bridge, improvement work on the road surface, and the installation of new lighting..

A figure of €548,566 was included in the roads programme for works at Garrycastle Bridge and he said while this figure wasn’t entirely for this project, a substantial amount of the figure was for this particular contract.
