Westmeath minor team named for trip to wexford

The Westmeath minor football team for Saturday’s Leinster championship clash against Wexford has been named.

Aidan Lennon’s charges take on the Slaneysiders in the first round of the competition at Innovate Wexford Park (throw-in: 3pm).

Garrett Carr, son of former Westmeath minor manager Tom Carr, has been selected at No. 3, while Billy Flynn, son of former Meath and Mullingar Shamrocks ace Bernard Flynn, is also part of the full back line.

Maitiú Scally, who was impressive in this year’s league games, is in the half back line alongside Emmet Nally of Caulry and Rosemount’s Plunkett Maxwell. Milltownpass duo Finbar Coyne and Sam Duncan form the midfield pairing.

Aaron Roarke and Joe Halligan have been selected in the central positions in an attack which also includes Garrycastle’s Cathal Mannion.

The substitutes bench includes some players many observers might have expected to start, such as Darragh Healy, Paddy Sleator and Ronan O‘Toole. Also among the subs is Athlone’s Sam Omukoro, who played in the 2013 Leinster minor final against Kildare at Croke Park.

With Good Counsel of New Ross winning this year’s Leinster Schools SF ‘A’ title, Westmeath can expect a tough assignment in the south east on Saturday.
