Prime thoroughfare to close to traffic

A portion of Church Street in Athlone will be closed to traffic tonight and tomorrow night to facilitate resurfacing work.

Motorists will be unable to travel along the road from Nut’s Corner pub right down to Dunnes Stores in Irishtown, between the hours of 6.30pm and half past midnight on both nights. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the resurfacing project.

Local Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran told the Westmeath Independent that the council has decided to do the work at night in order to minimise disruption in the town, especially as number of roadworks are already happening in other areas at present.

“It’s a long time we are looking for this street to be done and it is going to be done in stages. It’s a kickstart to the town centre,” concluded the Independent public representative.
