Public invited to view solar eclipse safely at athlone castle
Midlands Astronomy Club is to host a free public viewing event for the solar eclipse in Athlone Castle tomorrow (Friday) morning at 8am.
Ireland will enjoy over 90% of the upcoming eclipse, which will be fully visible from the southern hemisphere.
In Athlone, it is expected to begin at 8.23am, reach its maximum at 9.27, and end at 10.35.
Being at the castle bright and early for the viewing will be well worth it, according to astronomy club chairperson Jason Fallon.
The viewing event at the castle is free-of-charge and the astronomy club will have special telescopes and solar glasses on-hand for members of the public to safely enjoy this rare phenomenon.
Jason reminded anyone watching the eclipse from home to remain safety conscious. Regular telescopes should not be used to view the eclipse as special solar filters are essential for safety. Jason also reminded people not to look directly at the eclipse without solar glasses, as this is very damaging to the eyes.
There has been a lot of interest in the eclipse, said Jason, explaining that the Laois and Roscommon heritage clubs are set to join the astronomy club at the castle for the viewing.
'It’s gaining momentum,” he added.
The Hodson Bay Hotel has also invited members of the public to view the solar eclipse over Lough Ree tomorrow morning.
'This rare event won't be seen again until 2026 so we reckon it's worth setting the alarm clock a little earlier for!' said a spokesperson for the hotel.
'We'll be serving tea and coffee in our lobby for anyone braving the morning chill!'
