Landlords can provide tenants details to irish water

Irish Water is increasing its efforts to ensure rented properties are registered for water charges - and the controversial utility has said landlords are now allowed to provide contact details of people to whom they have rented their property.

Irish Water said it would then try to get in touch with the tenants to confirm their details for the water charges.

This would also allow councils to provide Irish Water with details of tenants living in local authority homes.

In a statement, Irish Water said it was inviting property owners - 'including Local Authorities' to confirm their property details with the company.

'If the property is occupied, landlords can now provide contact details for their tenants. Irish Water will then engage directly with the occupants and provide them with an opportunity to confirm their details,' the statement said.

'This will ensure they receive the correct bill and may avail of the Government’s €100 Water Conservation Grant, details of which will be announced by Government later this year.

'Completing this process ensures that landlords can avoid receiving a bill for services they are not using themselves. It will also ensure that the tenants are billed correctly and are eligible for the €100 Water Conservation Grant.

'Landlord and tenants can confirm details at any time however Irish Water would encourage an early response to ensure details are as accurate as possible in advance of billing.'

It added that tenants and landlords could visit www.water.ie for further information or call Irish Water on LoCall 1890 448 448.
