Lennon succeeds carr as westmeath minor football boss

Aidan Lennon has been appointed as Westmeath minor football manager for the 2015 season.

An All-Ireland minor medal winner with Westmeath in 1995, Lennon succeeds former Dublin and Roscommon manager Tom Carr in the role.

Lennon, the Westmeath goalkeeper during that famous 1995 success, was a selector under Carr for the past two years.

From Horseleap, Lennon has played for the St Joseph’s club for many years, and he represented Westmeath at senior level. Indeed, he won a Leinster senior football medal with Westmeath in 2004, when he was understudy to Gary Connaughton during that memorable championship campaign.

Westmeath Minor Board chairman Liam McDaniel put Lennon forward for the position of manager at last Tuesday night’s county board meeting. McDaniel pointed to Lennon’s qualifications in coaching and he mentioned his experience as a selector and his role on the successful 1995 team.

Lennon went to secondary school in Moate and played for the Carmelite College. Aidan would also be well known in Athlone having been previously based in the town through his work with Bank of Ireland.

Meanwhile, Eddie Casey (St Oliver Plunkett’s) and Pat Clancy (Brownstown) have been appointed as selectors for the Westmeath senior hurling team.

Casey and Clancy were ratified at Tuesday night’s county board meeting and will assist new Westmeath senior hurling boss Michael Ryan, who previously managed Waterford.

A manager of the Westmeath minor hurling team has yet to be appointed.
