Athlone boxer wins European youth silver medal

Athlone boxer Cheyanne O'Neill took home a fantastic silver medal from the European Women’s Youth Championships finals in Italy today (Sunday).

Cheyanne, a member of the Athlone Boxing Club, had earned a berth in the lightweight final, by overcoming Polish fighter Justyna Pietas and Ukranian Iryns Yaskova in the semi-final and quarter-finals respectively, on unanimous decisions.

In today's final O'Neill lost on an unanimous decision (40-36, 40-36, 40-36) to Sweden's Agnes Alexiusson, widely regarded as the best in the world.

Alexiusson claimed AIBA World Youth gold last year and will also represent her country at this year's World youth Olympics.
