St Brigid's girls denied in league final despite Conlon's treble

Strokestown 4-13 St Brigids 4-3

St Brigid's ladies lost out to old rivals Strokestown in the 2014 Roscommon Division 1 League final at Athleague on Saturday last.

Despite Jenny Conlon scoring three goals for the Kiltoom/Cam outfit, it was Strokestown who possessed even more firepower on this occasion.

The Strokestown full-forward line of Judy McDermott, Laura Brudell and Aisling Hanley lead the way with a combined total of 4-9. The other four points were well taken scores by centre-forward Niamh McHugh.

St Brigid's started the game the better and had a green flag raised after two minutes with a goal from Jenny Conlon. This could have being added to in the seventh minute when a Claire O'Brien effort was saved by Maire Mullooly. Strokestown upped their game and points from each of the inside forwards has the teams level by the 16th minute. Laura Brudell then put Strokestown ahead from a free.

Brigids were putting some good moves together but scores were not resulting. A good run from Aine O'Brien resulted in a point in the 18th minute. Niamh McHugh responded with a point from distance for Strokestown.

The game swung in Strokestown's favour between the 21st and 25th minutes with two well taken goals by county minor, Aisling Hanley. Strokestown were on top as the game headed to half-time but a number of wides prevented them from extending their lead. In injury time a point from Claire O'Brien for the Brigid's was sandwiched between points by Aisling Hanley and Judy McDermott. At half-time Strokestown had a commanding lead on a score of 2-8 to 1-2.

It took eight minutes for the first score of the second half to arrive - a point for Strokestown. This was followed immediately by a goal by Judy McDermott. A goal effort by Aine O'Brien was saved, and this missed chance was followed by another two bad wides, which curtailed the chances of a Brigid's comeback.

Strokestown's dominance was complete when Aisling Hanley completed her hat-trick at the midway stage of the half.

The last quarter saw more play in the Strokestown half and Brigid's attacker Cliodhna McHugh hit the net in the 17th minute. This was followed by another goal chance saved by the Strokestown keeper. The wides mounted up with points chances not availed off.

Jenny Conlon got her second goal of the game with eight minutes of play to go. Nicole Nestor added to point to the Kiltoom side's tally. Another Brigid's goal chance was deflected out for a 45. Niamh McHugh added a point as the game went into injury time. This was followed by a Brigids' goal with Jenny Conlon completing her hat-trick. The scoring for the day was concluded with a free from Laura Brudell and a point from Niamh McHugh.

Apart from the aforementioned scoring forwards, Strokestown had impressive performance from Maire Mullooly in goal, Feena Beirne at full-back and Aisling McAuliffe in midfield. Brigid's were best served in the scoring stakes by Jenny Conlon, while Claire O'Brien put in a good hour of effort.
