New Garrycastle Bridge opens today
Athlone’s new €3.6m Garrycastle Bridge has opened to traffic today.
The project involves a full, new realigned bridge with two 3.65m wide road lanes for traffic, two cycle tracks, separated from the road by a verge and new lighting and footpaths.
The scheme also includes the road realignment of the R916 (AIT to Woodville road), with a new two-lane carriageway for 700m from a location 300m north of the junction with the Old Dublin Road, and 150m south of the N6 westbound. Two new roundabouts connect the roads.
Construction began on the new bridge project in April of last year. The official opening of Garrycastle Bridge is due to take place next month.
