By Kieran Galvin
Kerry football legend Darragh Ó Sé will be the guest speaker at the Athlone IT Sports Awards next Wednesday, April 9.
A winner of six All-Ireland senior football medals, Ó Sé is regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in the history of the sport. He was a member of the last Kerry team to win the Sam Maguire Cup in 2009 when the Kingdom defeated age old rivals Cork in the final.
Darragh is a nephew of the great Páidí Ó Sé, who won eight All-Ireland medals with Kerry as a player, and led Westmeath to their first-ever Leinster senior football title in 2004.
A member of An Ghaeltacht in West Kerry, Darragh won four All-Star awards during his illustrious career. His brother Tomas retired from inter-county football last season. Younger brother Marc is a still a member of the Kerry panel and he played against Westmeath in last Sunday's Allianz Football League Division 1 game in Cusack Park.
In recent years, Darragh has become active as a media pundit. He has contributed to programmes on Today FM and TV3, and has written a column for The Irish Times.
The AIT sports awards function takes place in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel next Wednesday at 6.30pm.
Sporting stars from a wide variety of sports will be honoured at the event.
