Athlone sex assault accused to appear in court tomorrow

A man is due to appear before a sitting of the District Court tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, charged in connection with a serious sexual assault on two girls.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in Athlone last Saturday. 

In a statement, the Gardai said arrangements surrounding a venue for the court hearing would be confirmed in the morning. 

A large crowd has been gathered outside Athlone Garda Station throughout the evening.  

The victims of the alleged assault are understood to be aged just six and nine.
