Hot weather brings water disruption in Athlone area

The ongoing stretch of hot weather this week has contributed to water disruption in the Athlone area.

Westmeath County Council has said that Athlone households 'may experience low pressures and possible disruption to water supply' today (Friday).

The council said the disruption was caused by 'essential maintenance in Athlone Water Treatment Plant and exceptional demand on water supplies.'

The local authority is calling on people to conserve water during the current heatwave.

'Non-essential water usage involving watering lawns, washing cars, filling swimming pools, etc., should be avoided,' said its statement on the issue.

'Householders should regularly check outdoor taps, pipes and plumbing fixtures for leaks. In rural areas, it is essential that all cattle-watering troughs and pipelines are checked for leaks and that all water wastage is eliminated.'

Met Eireann said temperatures will decrease over the coming days but it's expected to remain generally dry over the weekend and into next week.
