Over 1,500 students sit Leaving Cert in Westmeath

Over 1,500 students will sit the Leaving Cert in Westmeath this year, which begins today with the English paper. Some 1,542 Westmeath pupils will undertake the exams over the coming weeks, 782 females and 760 males, according to figures held by the State Examinations Commission. A further 56 students will undertake the Leaving Cert Applied - 29 females and 27 males. The Junior Cert also gets underway today, with 1,366 students in Westmeath sitting the exam, 697 girls and 669 boys. In neighbouring Roscommon some 275 females and 296 males will sit the Leaving Cert, a total of 571 students. Strangely, an identical number of students will undertake the Junior Cert, made up of 291 girls and 280 boys. Some 32 students will sit the Leaving Cert Applied, ten females and 22 males. Nationwide 55,383 students will sit the Leaving Cert, with a further 3,269 students undertaking the Leaving Cert Applied. Some 56,513 students will sit the Junior Cert examination across the country. This year all written exam papers will be published on the State Examinations Commission"s website www.examinations.ie on the evening that the exam is completed. A daily bulletin board will also be available on the site, which will provide information on items of interest that will arise during the exams. The Leaving Cert results will be available this year on Wednesday, August 12, and students will be able to access their results online from 12 noon that day. The wait will be somewhat longer for Junior Cert student who will not receive their results until mid-September.
