A piece of Athlone football history makes its way to new stadium
A unique piece of local sporting and social heritage is to be generously donated to the townspeople of Athlone by Athlone Towncentre. Next weekend, Athlone Towncentre will formally present an historic framed picture of the Athlone Town squad which won the Free State Cup in 1924 to Athlone Town FC. Measuring five feet in width and well over three feet in height, the massive team picture honours a glorious part of Athlone"s rich sporting tradition. Having hung in the Royal Hoey Hotel for well over 50 years, the framed momento has a fond place in the heart of many Athlonians. The Athlone Towncentre was constructed on a central site which included the former Royal Hoey Hotel. When the centre developers acquired the fixtures and fittings of the hotel as part of its purchase, the picture along with other items of historical interest was placed in secure storage. Athlone Towncentre marketing manager Shirley Delahunt said: 'Athlone Towncentre is always eager to support community groups and organisations within Athlone. As part of the make-up of the town, we are always happy to give something back to the local community. We"ve had a number of queries about the picture over the last few years, and felt it was only proper to donate the picture back to Athlone Town FC for display in their fantastic new stadium.' She continued: 'The recent publication of a new book, When We Were Kings, telling the story of this very team means it is now an opportune time for Athlone Towncentre to hand over this piece of the town"s history to the local football club.' The presentation of the picture to the club will be made before kick-off at next Friday night"s home game against Limerick in Athlone Town Stadium, Lissywollen. (June 5th 7.45pm). The picture will then be placed on permanent display in the stadium. Tony Knight, chairman of Athlone Town FC, said: 'Athlone Town FC, as Ireland"s oldest League of Ireland club, has a proud tradition in the game. We are delighted to receive this part of our own history and look forward to giving it a new home. We are particularly appreciative of the gesture from Athlone Towncentre.' More details of the cup winners of 1924 can be found in the new book When We Were Kings which is available in local stores and online at www.whenwewerekings.ie With over 70 stores and a variety of cafes and restaurants catering for all tastes, Athlone Towncentre has become a leading fashion-focused shopping destination in Ireland with renowned Irish and International retailers offering the latest style to discerning fashion lovers.
