Cup joy for Castlerea
Congratulations are extended to Castlerea Celtic on their fantastic win in the Connacht Cup final at Terryland Park, Galway. Before a huge following from Castlerea, they were convincing 2-0 winners over the Galway City side West Utd. The losers, who were playing in their own back yard, were hotly tipped to beat Castlerea Celtic, who had never previously even reached the semi-final despite being one of the oldest clubs in the country. This was a magnificent team performance from Castlerea Celtic with everyone working their socks off for a win. Giles McDonagh volleyed the first goal after 20 minutes and Ronan Curran prodded home a second seven minutes later after a fine cross from Conor McSharry. Castlerea Celtic "keeper and man of the match Evan Curran saved a Tom Burke penalty kick a few minutes later after a defender was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Overall, it was a great season for the Roscommon & District Football League. The representative side reached the semi-final of the Oscar Traynor Cup and were unlucky to be beaten by the eventual winners of the cup. Within the last two weeks, the Roscommon League opened their new clubhouse and pitches with all the domestic finals now being played on the beautiful surface. Meanwhile, Loughglynn Utd added the Division 1 Cup to their Division 1 League championship win by beating Moylough 3-1 at the league ground in Lecarrow on Saturday evening. Ballaghaderreen returned to the Roscommon & District League after many seasons and won the Division 3 Cup by beating Cloonfad Utd 4-0 at the Lecarrow on Sunday.
