Sadness at death of Athlone 'legend' Breffni Rowan

Breffni Rowan, a hugely respected figure known for his involvement in underage soccer and local politics in Athlone, has died.

His passing came just days after the FAI presented him with a services to football award during its AGM celebrations in Athlone.

Breffni played a pivotal role in the foundation and development of the Athlone and District Schoolboys/Girls League (ADSL) and he worked with a massive number of young footballers over the years.

In a statement issued on behalf of the ADSL this morning, its secretary, Terry O'Neill, said: 'The ADSL are saddened to learn of the death of one of our founder members and a true legend Mr Breffni Rowan, RIP.

'Bref will be fondly and well remembered by all who knew him. On behalf of all our football family, we extend our sincerest sympathies to his family at this very sad time. May He Rest in Peace.'

Breffni was elected to Athlone's Urban District Council as an Independent in 1985 and spent 19 years as a local representative.

Along with Pat 'Cisco' Flynn, who died in June, he coached the only Athlone Town team ever to win the FAI Youths Cup in the 1980s.

People wishing to pay their respects can do so at Flynn's Funeral Home, The Strand, on Friday from 5.30pm to 8pm.

Please take note that there will be no removal to the church on Friday night from the funeral home.

Removal will be from Breffni's house on Saturday morning for Mass at 11am in S.S. Peter & Paul's Church.

The family has asked for the house to remain private at all times please.
